Torch spotted a beautiful blue mare in the sky and watched her for some time. Once she touched down, he soared for awhile to try to impress her. Having failed thus far, he has landed and is strutting his sexy stuff for all he's worth. He knows he's a gorgeous boy and won't give up until she chases him away. Is she about to, or is she simply leading him on?

So the beautiful girl here is *WSTopDeck's Noctiluca. She is rather larger than Torch, and her wings are kinda shaped funny, but he doesn't care; he watched her fly and the fact that she's a girl is all he cares about.

This is for *WSTopDeck's contest to draw one of her characters. There aren't a whole lot of Noctiluca, but she is gorgeous and quite fun to draw! It was interested to see just how opposite the two are as I began to color in Torch. I didn't realize how icy-blue she was. So I carried the contrast a little bit into the sky. Plus, I said I'd do more cloud pictures anyways . . . As per usual, my colored pencils. Almost wiped out my white (which I have a spare of anyway . . . ), but mostly cause the stupid lead kept breaking every time I tried to sharpen it. I did not put as much effort into the grass as normal. What do you think? Does it look good? Horrible?

Anyways, enjoy!

Just used various helpful photos for Noctiluca, and one inspirational photo for the sky. Did not actually reference from these though . . .

Very nicely colored, lots to draw your eye to the subjects, and nice contrast.

Thank you! I debated darkening the clouds, but I didn't want to interfere with Torch. And me and my bright colors . . . :D

Bright is good, when done correctly. You have some very, very well thought out color contrast here. You can easily see the shape of the wings and head, you don't have to look for it.

Very good to hear! That was the intent. It would stink to spend so many hours just to lose them in the background. I was a little worried about the pale wings, though. That was a new technique for me.

The transparent effect is spot-on. I might have darkened the pink behind the mare to make them a little more visible around the edges, but all in all, it's still very well done. Transparency always makes my eye twitch. It's almost as hard to get right as water.

I agree there! I haven't even come close to getting a handle on drawing water yet! And splashes are a totally different challenge from bodies of water . . .

beautiful

I love it!!!

Haha, I love the idea of Torch showing off like a tropical bird trying to attract a mate! And Noctiluca is showing about as much interest as a female of the species too... :giggle: Wonderful picture!
