Done for LantairVlea on LiveJournal as a part of EquineExchange. This is her character, Compass. Usually vibrant and energetic, here she pauses to watch as the storm rolls in.
So, I thought I'd try something new. I figured some clouds couldn't be too time-consuming. Boy, was I wrong! The horse and grass were done fast, the sky took days! Anyways, roughly drawn from my own photo, which I'll get posted on my stock gallery pretty quick. Aye. I think I'm gonna have to put EquineExchange on hold til the new year, though. So depressing . . . Also, Compass is supposed to be a Morab. Does it look at all like I accomplished that? I'm not so good at the subtle differences between horse breeds. I just really don't see them, but then, I don't live with horses either.
Anyways, colored pencil as per usual. No watercolors in this one, this time. No reference for the horse, too! I'm pretty proud of that. Well, LantairVlea, I hope you like it!
Yes, clouds are freaking bitches. Sometimes they come easy and I say wow I got it but in the next painting they look like grey splashes of nothing good.
Clouds are quite sneaky things, they look so easy, but are tremendously time-consuming. She looks fantastic, thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into it!
It took me a while to start recognizing breeds, the best suggestion I have is to start collecting horse books, especially breed books so it's easier to compare. Requesting information from regestries can also get you some good (free!) information on different breed standards.
WOW...just WOW!!! the clouds and sky looks absolutely amazing..sooo alive with the play of light and shadow.
It's beautiful...
If breeds give you a problem, either borrow a couple of nice horse/breed books with pictures from the library and if you come across one that you really like you could invest in it. Or you could hunt around for photoreferences and save them on your pc. Even with a couple of breedbooks, most of my horses end up taking on arabian features but I'm sure it'll help you loads considering your talent.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.

We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
